Is your job hunt being hampered by ageism?

Do you ever feel like job hunting can be a bit of a rollercoaster? Well, if you're part of Gen Z or at the more seasoned end of the workforce, you might nod along to that. Turns out, according to a survey by Resume Builder, some hiring managers are demonstrating bias against both ends of the age spectrum.

It's called ageism, and it's not new but, when you're trying to land a job and someone's already made up their mind about you based on how many candles were on your last birthday cake it can be very disheartening.

I have spent over a decade helping my clients to find their ideal roles in the property industry. My advice? Be savvy about the landscape you're navigating.

Resume Builder surveyed 1,000 hiring managers, and 42% of them admitted they're peeking at your age when they look over your resume. They're counting your years of experience, checking out when you graduated, and even scouting for a photo.

One suggestion is to take the graduation year off your CV. It's like keeping your age a secret. After all, what matters most is that you got the degree, not when you got it.

However, some hiring managers are like Sherlock Holmes when it comes to sleuthing out your age. They'll go to great lengths to figure it out, even if you've scrubbed your resume clean of any age-related clues.

So, why are some folks so hung up on age? Well, it might be because the people doing the hiring are often from a different generation. According to the survey, more than 60% of them were between 25 and 44 years old. So it might simply be a case of bias against everybody younger than them and older than them.

Don’t get too discouraged. Every generation gets its fair share of flak. Remember when millennials were the butt of every workplace joke? Now, they're the ones facing biases from other age groups. Isn’t it funny how the tables turn?
